줄기는 가늘고 철사 모양이어서 아래로 휘여져 늘어지는 줄기가 많으며 작은 털로 덮여 있다. 잎은 어긋나고 버들잎처럼 홑잎으로 달리고 긴 타원형 또는 피침형으로 가장자리에 잔 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 4~10월까지 피기 때문에 "연중 피기"로 봐도 무난 할 것 같다. 줄기 끝에서 지름 2~3cm의 꽃이 8~30mm의 꽃자루에 달려서 핀다. 꽃잎은 4개로 방사성 대칭이고 꽃잎에는 줄무늬가 있다. 수술은 꽃잎과 같거나 또는 배수로 나고 암술은 1개이며 암술대의 끝은 4개로 갈라진다.

꽃잎이 마치 나비모양과 비슷하다고 하여 나비 접(蜨)자를 활용해 흰색꽃을 백접초, 붉은색꽃을 홍접초라고 합니다.

꽃이 피면 나비가 나르는 것처럼 보인다하여 "나비풀"이라 부르기도 한다. 시중에서 판매되고 있으며 바늘꽃(도입종)이라 불리고 있다.

가우라 린드헤이메리(Gaura lindheimeri)라고 하는 공식 이름이 있지만 보통 가우라로 불리운다

Gaura is a genus of flowering plants in the family Onagraceae, native to North America. The genus includes many species known commonly as beeblossoms. Recent genetic research has shown that the genus is paraphyletic unless the monotypic genus Stenosiphon is included within Gaura, increasing the number of species in the genus to 22.^[1][2][3]

They are annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plants; most are perennials with sturdy rhizomes, often forming dense thickets, crowding or shading out other plant species. They have a basal rosette of leaves, with erect or spreading flowering stems up to 2 m (rarely more) tall, leafy on the lower stem, branched and leafless on the upper stem. The flowers have four (rarely three) petals; they are zygomorphic, with all the petals directed somewhat upwards.

The fruit is an indehiscent nut-like body containing reddish-brown seeds. It reproduces via seeds and also by rhizome growth.
